This DIY Headboard Is a ’70s Style, Modern (Affordable) Mashup

December 31,2021 By Adam Davis Leave a Comment

Did you catch a peek at Jes and Caleb’s vintage-inspired home that featured this dreamy DIY headboard and wood wall combo in the guest room? The couple says they’ve always been inspired by the ’70s, so they opted for adding wood paneling to create an over-sized headboard. It pays homage to the mid-century decor element, yet looks modern at the same time.

Though the couple says they’re fond of ’60s and ’70s style, it’s not a look they wanted to recreate entirely in their own home. They wanted to add in their personality but respect the home’s original architecture, too.

“It’s hard to explain, but we believe old houses shouldn’t feel too modern,” they explained. “You’ve gotta preserve the charm of their era!” With the resurgence of wood and other natural textures as accents in the home, the couple was inspired to get a little woodsy in the guest bedroom. Their simple DIY headboard project is the perfect mix of looks: the paneling gives off ’70s vibes, but the paneling’s wood tone has a mid-century feel and only choosing to use the paneling on the wall behind the two twin-size beds — like creating an oversized, floor-to-ceiling custom headboard — is just the right amount of modern. It adds a warmth to the space without looking too dated.

Jes and Caleb used wood panels from Lowe’s for their DIY project, which can range anywhere from $5 to $30 for most panels. So depending on the finish you choose, this DIY project can present an affordable way to completely transform a room and make a statement.

“I think the most challenging part of any space for us is finding things we love the look of at a price that makes sense. I think this is why we end up doing so many things ourselves. We often can’t find what we’re looking for so we have to make it ourselves.”
